The History and Culture of Guanacaste: A Timeless Connection

Almost forty years ago, Marcos Buechley arrived in the sun-drenched province of Guanacaste, Costa Rica. What was meant to be a visit quickly turned into a lifelong love affair with the region’s landscapes, traditions, and people. Enchanted by the rolling hills, pristine beaches, and warm hospitality, he decided to make this paradise his second home, acquiring what is now known as Casa Don Marcos.

Since then, Guanacaste has remained at the heart of our story, a place where history, culture, and tradition blend seamlessly.

A Region Shaped by History

Guanacaste is not just a beautiful destination—it’s a land deeply rooted in history. Originally inhabited by Chorotega Indigenous groups, the region’s traditions still echo through its people, food, and festivals. Over time, it became a key part of Costa Rica’s identity, officially joining the country on July 25, 1824—a day still celebrated with lively parades, traditional music, and delicious local cuisine.

The province has a strong cowboy (or sabanero) culture, influenced by Spanish colonization. Even today, you can see this heritage in the annual Tope (horse parades), rodeos, and the famous marimba music that fills the air during festivities.

The Spirit of Guanacaste Lives On

For centuries, the people of Guanacaste have preserved a way of life centered around community, storytelling, and a deep connection to the land. Whether it’s the art of crafting tortillas by hand, the warmth of a casado meal shared with family, or the vibrant energy of a fiesta patronal, every tradition tells a story of resilience and pride.

Even today, visitors can experience the warmth of the locals, the flavors of authentic Costa Rican cuisine, and the rhythms of folkloric dance and music. From the colonial-era architecture in Nicoya to the golden shores of Tamarindo, Guanacaste continues to captivate hearts, just as it did for Marcos Buechley all those years ago.

Experience the Magic of Guanacaste

Whether you’re savoring a gallo pinto breakfast at sunrise, riding horseback through rolling plains, or watching the sun dip behind the Pacific, Guanacaste offers something truly special.

For Marcos Buechley, Casa Don Marcos was more than just a place—it’s a testament to a decades-long love affair with a region that continues to inspire all who visit.

Pura vida, and welcome to a land where history and culture thrive.
